If you understand the history of the Fort Lowell area, you understand much of the history of Arizona. The Fort Lowell area is more than just the territorial fort and staging area for the final Indian campaign against Geronimo. Most of the cultural layers of Tucson are present here because of the oasis of water and trees at the confluence of the Pantano Wash and the Tanque Verde Creek which became the Rillito (little river).
